TRauma-informed yoga

What is trauma-informed yoga?

Trauma-informed yoga is a gentle, choice-based practice designed to support safety, empowerment, and self-regulation. It recognizes how trauma can affect the body and nervous system and avoids practices that may feel overwhelming or triggering.

Trauma-informed yoga is for anyone. Many people appreciate the slower pace, emphasis on choice, and non-judgmental environment—even without a trauma history.

How is trauma-informed yoga different from a regular yoga class?

Classes prioritize choice, consent, and predictability. Teachers refrain from offering physical assists, use invitational language, offer multiple options, and focus less on achieving poses and more on how the practice feels in your body.

You are always encouraged to listen to your body. You can rest, change positions, step outside, or stop practicing at any time. The use of grounding tools may be used to help you reconnect to the present moment.

Is this therapy or a replacement for counseling?

No. Trauma-informed yoga is not therapy and does not replace counseling or mental health treatment. It does not diagnose or treat psychological disorders.

Research indicates, however, that yoga-based interventions can serve as a supportive adjunct to mental health care, with studies showing reductions in self-reported PTSD and depressive symptoms when yoga is used alongside or in addition to other treatments (Cramer et al., 2018; van der Kolk et al., 2014).
